You are a component designed into someone else's system
A LiDAR unit, a camera, a MEMS sensor, or a photonic component is rarely the end product; it gets integrated into an autonomous vehicle, an instrument, a factory line, or a defense platform. That means your buyer is an engineer or integrator evaluating fit, interface, and integration risk, and your success is measured in design-ins that play out over the host product's development cycle. Marketing has to speak to how you slot into a larger system and de-risk the integration, not just tout the sensor in isolation, which is what most spec-sheet marketing does.

The decision is made on performance under real, messy conditions
Engineers evaluate sensing on hard, specific metrics, range, resolution, field of view, accuracy, signal-to-noise, latency, power, and crucially, how those hold up in the real environment: rain, fog, vibration, temperature, EMI, lighting. A spec that shines on a bench and degrades in the field is worse than useless, and buyers know it, so they discount lab numbers and demand test data in conditions like theirs. Marketing that leads with best-case bench specs and ignores real-world robustness loses the engineer who has been burned by exactly that gap.

The market splits into deep, specific verticals
Automotive and autonomy, defense, industrial automation and machine vision, medical imaging, scientific instrumentation, and geospatial or remote sensing each have different requirements, standards, buying processes, and proof expectations. A message and proof set tuned for one is wrong for another, and a generic sensing pitch lands nowhere. The work is vertical-specific positioning and application proof, showing the automotive buyer automotive-grade evidence and the scientific buyer measurement rigor, rather than one datasheet for all.

The design-in cycle is long, and switching is a re-integration
Like semiconductors, sensing components get designed in over long cycles, and once you are in, you hold the socket for the product's life, while switching means the customer re-integrates and re-validates, a cost they avoid without a decisive reason. Marketing is therefore sustained credibility and relationship-building across a long cycle, and the case for switching has to be strong enough to justify re-integration and re-qualification. Judging it on this quarter's leads misreads the game.

The proof is technical, and often constrained by NDAs and clearances
Credibility here is test data, application notes, reference integrations, and third-party validation, and much of the best proof, which platform you are designed into, what performance it achieved, is locked under NDA or, in defense, behind clearances and controls. So marketing has to build authority on the technical substance it can publish, rigorous, honest, condition-stated performance, while navigating what it cannot say, rather than leaning on the named-logo case studies other categories use freely.

Engineers research components by spec, in search and AI
A perception or instrumentation engineer looking for a sensor searches a specific requirement, a range, a wavelength, a resolution, an interface, a use case, and increasingly asks an AI assistant for candidates before pulling datasheets. If you are not discoverable and credible at that exact technical query, you are never on the list. Being invisible at the engineer's first search or AI query quietly removes you from integrations you never knew you lost.
